Assignment

 

Replacement of the manager Research and Policy during her sabbatical. Management of the department and member of the Management Team. Coaching of staff members in a situation of crisis and uncertainty. The tasks of the department of Research & Policy of the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights are to do research, compose advises to government and parliament, report to international human rights institutes, and supervise the implementation in the Netherlands of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Result


The main focus was on providing continuity and stability. A development plan and a kickstart was made for two new strategic programmes for livelihood security & human rights and discrimination & human rights. Several processes and procedures have been improved and simplified. Vacancies have been filled and the capacity planning for 2024 has been concluded. A paper was written in close consultation with the Director and Management Team with options to improve the governance, as well as a draft for governance regulations, to be discussed with internal and external stakeholders. Furthermore, a concise  analysis of the department was written.

To conduct an evaluation and future outlook of the Pro Bono Connect Project (PBC), a project of the Netherlands Commission of Jurists for Human Rights (Nederlands Juristen Comité voor de Mensenrechten NJCM) that connects Dutch NGO’s with law firms for pro bono legal support.

The objective of the evaluation and future outlook was:

  • How can the PBC project best achieve its potential, i.e. servicing NGOs with legal support?

  • Strengthening confidence of all stakeholders by organizing a joint review and a shared vision for the future.

  • Looking back at last year’s processes in order to assess which lessons can be learned regarding governance, communication, positioning of the project and its content policy.

The evaluation therefore primarily had a future oriented objective: how can we ensure that PBC can continue as a successful project?

Result


The result was an extended report with findings, conclusions and recommendations for Board and Advisory Committee. The recommendations relate to strategy, positioning, governance, organization and cooperation.

Assignment

Giving advice regarding the Project Reinforcing Cancer Patient Organizations, aimed at:

  • Making a proposal to expand and reinforce the Backoffice of NFK supporting cancer patient organizations.

  • Making a proposal for an additional flexible funding facility for the reinforcement of cancer patient organizations and solving bottlenecks herein.

​

NFK is a federation of 19 Cancer Patient Organizations, largely funded by Dutch Cancer Sociey KWF. There is a lot of diversity in size, professionalism needs and interests.

Both proposals had to fit within the multi annual policy of NFK, the partnership with KWF (Dutch Cancer Fund) and need to be sustainable.

Result

​

The result was a broad agreement by the members of NFK on the proposals. This has led to an expanded backoffice (more services for more members) as well as additional funding for cancer patient organizations, with clear and agreed criteria and regulations.

Interim management of the Domestic Department :

  • to ensure the implementation of the activities of the domestic programme and monitoring the realization of the objectives in the annual plan;

  • to manage efficient and effective processes of the department in order to deploy the available capacity as good as possible;

  • functional management, coaching and aimed at productivity and satisfaction of staff members;

  • to bring structure and stability in the domestic programme by management and coaching, decision making with the framework of the annual plan and prevent deviations thereof.

To provide advice to the Board of Directors on three issues::

  • the optimal structure of the domestic department;

  • the fulfilment of the key positions in the department;

  • the optimal position of the domestic department in the organization and how to implement this.

Result

​

The initial result was more clarity and stability within the department. Eventually, this resulted in an advice for a new structure and better positioning of the department within the organization. This advice, which  included staffing and budget consequences, was endorsed by the Board of Directors.

Ad interim covering the position of Organisation Director. Management of team leads for Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation; Finance, ICT & Facilities; Human Resources & Organization and Executive Secretariat. Review of the 2015 restructuring and advising on needed changes in the organization and process improvements for support functions.

Result

​

The Interim Organisation Director led three projects to establish improvements in organizations development, planning & control and quality & learning, with expert working groups and larger sounding board groups to create broad support.

The result was an organizational vision that was approved by the Board of Directors as well as a decision regarding restructuring of the organization with a new team structure and dual leadership for each team. Furthermore the financial management was strongly improved as well as other support processes.
